Devilfish Mk I: Better the Devil you know...

Hello one and all!

Days fleet past and I am so out of touch with all the wargamming madness, so I reside in my 'Hermit Hole' counting the days in paint pots, brushes and endless University Notes, obviously the former is the far more interesting to talk about. I look forward to rekindling my artistic spirit over this Christmas break. Here, we have my very first Devilfish. Read on to hear my thoughts on this new model and also a small segment on my thoughts of the new Tau...

XV88: Hey there Mr Broadside!

Welcome once again to my little blog!

A theme of lasts seems to be cropping up now as I start to progress through this army, and I continue with the last Broadside. I love to loathe these models, let's be honest they look really cool but they are so impractical, their tiny little legs cannot hold their massive upper bodies. GW seriously needs to get these guys to stop skipping leg day. And to be fair to them, they have. The new Broadside models are so much more practical providing a sturdy base even if they are just plastic. In my opinion it was the best remodel GW has done for a long time. Onto the pictures!

Firewarrior Squad IV: Posing for the camera!

Hello again!

A relatively quick post to showcase the full Squad IV of Firewarriors. Some close ups to follow after the break!

Filling in the Ranks! Firewarrior Squad IV: Part 2

Hello!

Once again we find ourselves on the war torn front line of the Tau Empire. As I have heard there are rumours going about for a new Tau codex. I have no idea how pivotal they will be in this codex. From my experience with the current codex a solid Firewarrior line is deadly, but the last time I played 40k was 6th edition so my opinion may be out dated. I have had a blast painting these guys but alas it is my last firewarrior squad for this army. Read on to here what my thoughts are for these models and what could be done for possible new kits in the new codex.

Watch your back! Firewarrior Squad IV reporting for duty!

 Hello one and all!

What a busy time it has been, I hope you are all keeping well. I have been busy painting, studying and golfing - unfortunately not in that order as a certain 'S' word was taking priority. But I'm back, bolstered and busy with my big ol' battle brush to bring my Tau painting up to date! Read on to see some more shots of this new squad:

Attempted daylight robbery at Waterloo!

Hello one and all!

Time to start typing away again for this weeks post. Some weeks ago I was invited to play a fun game of Shako 2 using a massive sand pit - yes that's right a sand pit. It covers the full length of the room and is really spectacular to see. The sand is first moulded into shape - a vigorous process so I'm told - and then flocked with coloured finely ground saw dust. Words cannot convey it's grandure but the pictures to follow will hopefully do it justice!

Something New: A look back

Hello Folks,

Another year has come to an end. Despite it being fairly unproductive on my part I have enjoyed the few figures I have painted and slowly but surely I hope to keep up this trend. Instead of declaring my promises for the coming year I'm just going to paint little and often and we'll see what gets done. But for this post I decided to do something a bit different. I have collated the various single shot pictures of my commissioned Tau and put them into a movie with some funky space music for you to enjoy.(Music also known as Alpha Centauri by UFO, I do not own the copyrights for this music and I am using it without permission. All rights are owned by UFO and their labels.) So sit back, relax and enjoy this video.

The picture quality is better on my YouTube channel.
Happy New Year and all the best for 2015!

Piranha:HO! HO! Home again, flying fast on a two man open sleigh!

A nice addition of festive trees to bring some spirit to the picture!

Well Hello once again! Over indulgence of left over mince pies; turkey sandwiches are the treat for lunch; looks like Christmas is well and truly over and I have thoroughly enjoyed the respite. I hope you too have had a wonderful holiday. During my time off I was able to finish my first Tau Piranha, which has acted as the test for the future Tau vehicles. Despite some small hiccups to begin with the overall process ran smoothly. Be sure to see some close ups after the break.

Vespids: Well, well, well. What have we here?

Hello Folks,

Long time no type, eh? Well 2014 has been busy for us all. I would like to re-ignite this blog with a small spark to get it back off of the ground. The starting blocks have been gathering quite a lot of dust but I hope to push off with this post for some regular typified conversations with you lovely folks reading this at home. After the break I'll give you a small insight into what I have been doing and how I hope to get back into gaming over the next few months.

Tutorial: How to Paint a Vespid Stingwing

Hello,

The following is a tutorial for painting a Vespid Stingwing in the colour scheme of the normal blue-grey skin tone and Tau'Va sept colours. Please note I am in no way a professional painter and results of this tutorial are going to be to a very high gaming standard (if I don't say so myself :D). If you wish to achieve the same results as I have then look no further and I'll start with the tutorial.

For this tutorial you will need (approximately):
  • White Primer (I use Halfords matt primer)
  • Thunderhawk Blue (Or dark teal blue)
  • Dawnstone
  • Administratum Grey
  • Foundry Arctic Grey 33B
  • Foundry Austrian White C (or any med-light white)
  • Skrag Brown
  • Tau Light Ochre
  • Bronzed Flesh (Old GW - Not necessary)
  • Ungor Flesh
  • Foundry forest Green 26A (or any dark green)
  • Foundry Bright Green 25B and 25C (Or any mid - light green)
  • Golden Griffon (or any gold)
  • Kantor Blue (or regal Blue for Old GW)
  • Abaddon Black (or any Black)
  • Eshin Grey
  • Rhinox hide
Each stage will contain a separate component to represent the way I paint, this means if you are here for just the skin tone, then that will be separated out in each stage. The picture will be provided before the instructions (please note that pictures will have to be clicked to be enlarged so that you can get a good look at the detail). Thanks and hope this tutorial helps.

Stage 1:

Prep Work: After taking your model off of the sprew, carefully start to file or scrape off the mold lines, watch out for the antenna, they bend but if you move them around too much they break and cannot be glued back on, believe me I tried. I am using metal models not finecast. After you have cleaned up the models it is then time to glue them together with two part Epoxy glue. For those who are unsure, this is a glue that comes in two separate tubes, a resin and a hardener. You want about a 60:40 mix in preference to the resin in only pea sized amounts. If you have too much resin it will not dry, if you have too much hardener it will become brittle. Also use an old plastic cover off of a GW blister pack that used to contain metal minis and a paper clip. DO NOT USE A BRUSH. Also if the glue starts to dry on the mixing surface do not use it as it will not glue properly. If you have any further questions about the glue I use please feel free to ask in the comments section. Oh, and one other thing, DO NOT USE SUPER GLUE!!! It becomes brittle after a few years.

Stage 2:

Priming: the reason we prime our models is to give us a base layer to work off of for the type of colours we are going to use. Black would be used primarily for a darker coloured model like a model with a lot of chainmail etc. Grey and white are interchangeable, used primarily for models with a lighter colour scheme in mind. White undercoat is better for models with a colour scheme with a lot of washes and glazes. Now, after you have a applied your white undercoat, this is what your model should look like:

Now we want to apply our first few colours:

1. Heavy Wash: Apply to whole model except gun, however this does not matter, it just helps for later stages. For this stage you want to take your old/used number 4 or 5 Brush. Paint wise, we will use the Citadel Thunderhawk Blue in a 80:20 mix with water in favour of the blue, try and get a thick wash with the same consistency as full fat milk. You may wish to do a second coat if you feel your first try was too watery.
2. Layer Basecoat: Apply a layer of Dawnstone, this will not be watered down as it is our basecoat. Apply to all layers of skin including wings and face.

3. A second wash of Thunderhawk Blue is added after the basecoat. This should have the same consistency as milk, or a 60:40, Paint:Water ratio. This helps to add areas of shade and fill in any white dots of primer that haven't taken any of the paint so far. Pictures show front and back so that you can get your bearings of what your model should look like at this stage.

4. Apply First Light Layer: Using Administratum Grey we want to  start to distinguish between our light and dark areas. You can either do 2 or 3 layers depending on how shaded you want your model to be. The first picture shows Left Wing = first : Middle = second : Right Wing = third layer of paint.
The final two pictures at the bottom show what the model should look like after the whole model has had a third layer applied. Please notice that the antenna lines have been painted in with a 000 brush, I'm afraid to say this is a must have for this stage, if not then you will need a steady hand with your detail brush. The lines should almost look like a comb, with a line at the top and teeth coming down from the top, leaving the darker Dawnstone in-between.

5. Now we can start to apply paint to the areas we have ignored before going on to highlight the skin. For this step you want to take your standard brush, about a 2, and paint Skrag Brown onto the armour and the gun casing. Please note that there is an area under the wings that is armour and should be painted now. Before you start fixing any areas you may have gone over you want to take your detail brush, about a 0, and paint the wires and handle of the gun Abaddon black, for reference please see pictures.

6. Highlighting: Now we start to apply our first highlights to the skin. Using Foundry's Arctic Grey 33B you want to create a thin layer, so about 60:40 in favour of the paint. Taking your detail brush, (0), this goes over all the skin you have just done, do not use it as an edge highlight, since the Vespids have light skin, and the colours you have used so far are too dull, this light layer just helps the colour to snap out.

7. Layer: Using your detail brush apply the Tau Light Ochre in all its glory in two coats to all the areas you previously painted with Skrag Brown.

8. Highlighting: Using the Bronzed Flesh (or watered down Ungor Flesh) apply edge highlights to the gun with a detail brush. Also using the Austrian White (or substitute) apply an edge highlight to all areas on the skin and the lines you drew on the antenna. You will not notice much of a difference however it will just make them that little bit brighter and contrasting.

9. Further Highlighting: Apply Ungor Flesh to the gun, but do not highlight along all edges of the gun, just the corners, whether that be on a flat or raised surface. For the black areas apply a first highlight of Eshin Grey. This should be applied along the top where the light is naturally reflected, as a rough guideline to follow.

10. Final Highlighting: Now to add the finishing touches to the areas we have covered so far. For the gun you want to mix 50: 50 Ungor Flesh with Austrian white. Apply this to the most pronounced and distinct edges with your detail brush. For the black, apply small dots or strokes of Dawnstone over the Eshin Grey. Please see photo for reference.

11. Skin Decals: Now for the fun part, well for me anyway. Using a detail brush, use the Thunderhawk Blue watered down about 50:50, you want to start to line in where the bulk of the skin patterns are going to be. For feet and hands you want to paint about half the way up but try to leave a line of the white surrounding the blue area. For the knees just paint an oval at the bend in the knee. For the head, just a circle on the crown of his head where the bony parts are, on his head not the antenna. And for the wings and shoulders, (picture at the top right). Just the top of the shoulders and the middle section of the wings should be painted at this stage.

12. Left Picture: Fill in the Thunderhawk Blue with Kantor Blue, after that paint all the little bony bits Rhinox Hide with your finest detail brush, about a 00 or a 000. Also paint his toe - claws (not toe-nails :D), teeth and stinger with Rhinox Hide.
Right Picture: Now take the Ungor flesh and dab it onto all the bony bits and teeth. Also for his stinger and toe-claws, try and paint on the Ungor flesh so that it comes to a point at the end but leaves the brown in between at the beginning. Like a bone horn. If that description did not help please refer to the picture.

13. Claws and Bones: Apply Austrian White to the very tips of the claws on the feet. For the Bone studs on his skin and his teeth you want to take your finest detail brush and do a small dot of white, like you would do on a gem stone.

14. Left Picture: The Finer Details - In this stage we will start to fill in those gaps of detail with your normal detail brush. For the Pulse Ball in the gun, carefully paint Rhinox Hide Brown onto it filling in the crevasses, then paint the Ball sections gold. Remember you will need to do this for both sides of the gun.
Pulse Crystal - This small and intricate crystal is where you will need to summon your concentration, to not undo the work around it. Apply a basecoat of Forest Green 26A (or dark green equivalent) with your detail brush. Then try and notice the edges on the crystal, paint these with the Bright Green 25B, you should use your 000 brush for this. Next, using your 000 brush apply the Bright green 25C to the edges that occur about half way up the crystal until the point. Finally add a small dot of white at the end and voila it is done.
Right Picture: In this picture I have added the sept marking according to Games Workshop, however you can add any decal you want that corresponds to your army. Also I have painted in around the chest decal with Austrian White. I have also painted the base Rhinox Hide brown before basing.

Congratulations you have just painted your very first Vespid!

I hope that my method of painting was easy to follow for beginners and intermediates. I know these models are not well loved for their rules but I know of so many people who have bought them and do not know how to paint them. Thanks for reading, and until next time, bye for now!

Did you find this tutorial helpful? If so I would love to hear your feedback in the comments so that I can improve on the next one.

NEWS: 2013 Re-cap (and 2014 resolutions?)

Hello Folks,

Well another year has gone by in the big bad world, I honestly cannot believe how fast it has been. The Blog is almost two years old I did not believe I would be able to keep it going this long. I would now like to reflect over the past year to see how much I have painted. So don't worry this is going to be a short post!

A Much Needed Update

Hello folks,

I thought it was about time I made this announcement, it is with regret I'm going to have to postpone any posting on the blog for the next year or so. School work has taken its toll on my wargaming and I feel it is best for everyone if I make it official I won't be posting anytime soon. I can't remember the last time I lifted a paint brush I don't know when I will again. However I will try and finish the vespid tutorial round about Christmas time if I can fit it in between my studying. I tried to remain to the saying, "never say never," but the pressure from school is just to great. And I know the stress I'm feeling now is hardly anything compared to having a job, but it is time that is holding me back from painting or wargaming. I would like to apologise to anyone who was wanting to see my tutorial or any updates from any of my projects over the last two months.

At the moment I do have half finished Vespids sitting in my cupboard collecting dust and I might be able to break them out over the Christmas Holiday's between my studying. This also means I will not be entering Falkirk's Painting Competition which makes me very sad as I had such a buzz from last year it would be so gutting if I couldn't make it next year. I had so many high expectations for my blog at this time. I wanted to do battle reports, a free hand shield tutorial, finish off my Saga army and get some Tau Tactics on the site. All these things are slowly slipping out of my grasp and school has taken over completely. I thought this was a good time to say how sorry I am to anyone who was looking forward to see some more posts and I thank you for your patience.

However on a more positive note I have been doing a lot of work for my Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, like taking pictures. So I thought I would share some of the pictures I took from where I work and some breath taking landscapes when I was on my expedition:

Above is an abandoned and disused railway line that use to travel through the Galloway Forest.

This was on the Carrick Trail (I think) almost 300m above sea level

Some really nice autumn scenes creeping in already.

This was a burn which ran very near but not at our campsite, and yes for those of you who noticed that is someone's house on the right in the middle of nowhere.

Now this is a blue tongued skink(above), I particularly think this animal is ugly but it's tongue is quite cool. That's the male one that isn't looking too happy to have his picture taken.

These are Bosc Monitors, at the moment they are only two to three feet long, but these guys can grow to up to six feet long and weigh the same or even more than a fully grown man.

These turtles are really cool, they are Reeve turtles, a very close relation to terrapins I believe ( but don't take my word for it!) they grow to about six inches in length. Well I hope you enjoyed this post and I may not speak to you again until Christmas time, hopefully with something new. Thank you to all who have supported me this year especially the Tale of Painters crew for allowing me to take up a post to display my Tau, bye for now!

They're growing in numbers!

 Hello Folks,

I have sort of fulfilled my promises for the end of the week. I have finished the tutorial, I have taken the pictures and made my notes, it's just writing it up. But I have achieved what I wanted to so that I wasn't struggling to try and finish it during my first week back at school. The Vespid you see above is the one that will take to the main stage in the tutorial. I tried to select one that had a lot of flesh on it, so the Strain Leader was out of the equation, and the other two I had left, well one is missing an antenna which was blown off during a rapid fire bolter round and the other still had it's wings to be glued on! I'm really pleased with how these Vespids are turning out, even if it takes be about 5 hours per figure. They may not be much on the battlefield but as models I love them and can't wait to get my hands on mine! Click the link to see more close ups and a group shot so far.

'Buzz! Buzz! Buzz!' More Vespids to the Slaughter!

Hello Folks,

Yes I have painted another Vespid to keep his Buzz Buddy company! For those of you who missed the last post, it is the one on the left that is new but there is something new on the one on the right. After some careful zooming in and close looking at all the available images I realised that they also have Strain markings on the backs of their wings. However I don't know how much there is so I limited it, after all these are commission work and not my own models so some boundaries have to not be crossed. I also have an update on the tutorial for you. So click Read More for more photos and an update!

I believe I can fly!

Hello Folks,

Well it has been a long time coming but we eventually have our first glimpse at my attempt to paint the 'fluff' Vespids. It took me about three attempts before realising I couldn't actually do it without the correct paints. Therefore after gathering the correct materials I managed to get this guy finished over the course of an evening and part of an afternoon. After painting him with the correct paint and technique it was actually quite easy and I found it very therapeutic to paint in all the small dots and bone spikes. Read more to see more angles and a tragic update concerning the painting tutorial.

Lurking in the woods...

Hello Folks,

I know I didn't stick to my promises last week but I was too busy celebrating my good results. Even though I was painting I wasn't doing enough to actually have anything substantial to put up. We have here some more Kroot. This takes the running total to 20 kroot warriors, two krootox and two shapers. I have another 8 more kroot undercoated and awaiting some paint slapped on 'em. I also have another Krootox to build but at the moment I am not too concerned about that, after all I have all these wonderful vehicles to paint with Tau camouflage, WOO HOO! I may have to update the Tutorial in the above bar at the top, since I have perfected the technique a lot more and have simplified the stages so that they are becoming faster. Click the link to see more pictures and here what else I have been working on that is Tau related.

Time to see what we put on the 'Barbie'... and a small thank you.

Hello Folks,

I am going to try and make this post as mysterious as possible. At the moment I have only given you subtle hints as to what this model could possibly be. So far we have my Heroquest Game on Sunday, which is the truth, but I am going to use this model for that. Obviously the picture above and the title of this post. I wonder what on Earth it could be. Write in the comments if you guessed correctly.

Leopard Speck... Wait, a Firewarrior!

Hello Folks,

As promised yesterday I have taken pictures of the Firewarrior I painted up in the colour scheme I am doing my own Tau Army. Even though my army is far from being started properly it is always good to know that when the time comes around I have a scheme to paint them up as. I didn't add any speckles to this guy but I might leave them off the armour and put them on the skin of the firewarrior. I might leave up to you guys. Click read more for more ideas I had and the pictures of the man himself.

Progression Report: Units Forward!

Hello Folks,

Not going to be a long post but I thought I'd fill you in on what will be coming up over the next few days. Tomorrow will be my Firewarrior colour test mini, the day after that will be a surprise (I do have something planned but I won't tell you!), by Friday I hope to have these four kroot on my desk finished, maybe not based but finished. Then I will maybe do a review on the new Tau Boxes. So far I have built up a partial battlesuit, some drones and legs and torsos of a pathfinder squad. I was pleasantly surprised with the Evil Empire's new kits. This Sunday I will be playing a game of Heroquest. For those who don't know what Heroquest is, think of it as D&D for toddlers, a simple 2 dice system. D6's and attack die, Mind and HP for characters and some money and equipment here and there. Oh and lots of gobbos and orks to chop up! A good beer and pretzels game.

On a personal note, I got my exam results through today. I would take a picture of my results but they have my address and full name on them so I won't show them. But I will tell you my grades. First of for Intermediate 2( a simplified last year course) A's are good, B's are second best etc etc. For Credit, it as a mid range school level difficulty, normally a couple of years before you leave, but it has some last year level stuff in it as well, so 1's are the best, 2's are the second best etc etc. So if that made sense here are the grades:
  • Art and Design Intermediate 2 - A
  • French Intermediate 2 - A
  • History Intermediate 2 - A
  • Maths Credit - 1
  • Physics Credit - 1
  • Chemistry Credit - 1
  • Computing Studies Credit  - 1
  • English Credit  - 2
A cant beleeve ma englush let me doon, wat says yous, how do u think ma enlgush is! (He he :D)
So overall I did well, I am really pleased with my results, I can appeal for my English which means the Exam board look at my course work from earlier in the year and see if they have it in their cold hearts to change my grade, hopefully for the better! Most of you won't care but I thought I'd put it on here as a permanent memory. Thanks for reading and until next time, bye for now!

Javelins from the back! (and Claymore)

Hello Folks,

Well here we have the rear rank to the first unit of warriors. As you can see I was rapidly running out of colour ideas so decided to paint the two orange cloths slightly darker shades to one another. Everything else which has remained constant was done exactly the same. Once again I do promise a tutorial but I'm enjoying the Tau too much at the moment. So far I am on a 4 Game win streak, Black Templars, Smurfs and 2 games won against Thousand Sons. I am on a Tau'Va buzz and can't contain myself. I'm doing kroot of my commission and building up my Tau force on the down-low. I will also recap from Claymore, I didn't bring my camera but I wasn't there long enough to go round everything and take a picture of it. Read more to see more pictures and re-cap and links of Claymore.
